Councillors must serve a minimum of 15 years to be eligible.

The others received their awards at the annual meeting of the council in May but Mr Doherty was unable to attend on that date.

He thanked the council for the honour, and added: “All the councillors believe in what they are doing.”

The other newly created alderman are Henry Mitchell who represented Bispham, Val Haynes of Hawes Side, Sylvia Taylor of Claremont, Peter Evans of Stanley, and Joy Delves of Warbreck.
