Breastfeeding campaign wins talks pledge

Star Buddies, which organised advice for new mums who are struggling to breastfeed their babies from other mums as part of a peer support programme, lost its council funding in June.

Following an address to full council by protest leader Zoe Walsh, council leader Simon Blackburn has agreed to hold a meeting with her to discuss the future of the service.

Blackpool’s director of public health Dr Arif Rajpura will also attend the meeting.

Meanwhile Blackpool North and Cleveleys MP Paul Maynard is also calling for the service to be reinstated.

After a meeting with mothers held at Revoe Children’s Centre, he said: “This is not simply about breastfeeding, it is about the wider support a peer network can provide and the associated health and social benefits.

“It is important that the provision in this area reaches as many families as possible.”
