Brave transplant mum dies after op

Michele Satchwell (nee Coupe), died at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge on Monday following complications after a second kidney transplant.

Heartfelt tributes have been paid by her Fylde coast-based family and senior staff at the hospital, for which she was a staunch fund-raiser and campaigner.

Mrs Satchwell, who was 65, grew up in Lytham.

She was the middle of five children; her siblings Linda, David, Simon and Mandy are well-known on the Fylde coast.

She and her husband Bob, executive director of the Society of Editors, moved to Girton in the early 1980s.

In 2000, after a life-threatening illness caused by kidney problems, she was saved when her sister Linda, from Hardhorn, donated a kidney for transplantation.

Michele was a stalwart supporter of Addenbrooke’s, becoming chairman of the hospital’s fund-raising Friends organisation, and a vigorous campaigner for organ donation.

Mr Satchwell said: “She was a tireless campaigner for Addenbrooke’s, one of the leading transplant hospitals in the world, from before she had her first transplant.

“She had just enjoyed a weekend surrounded by her children and family.”

And brother David, speaking on behalf of the family, said: “She was much-loved by her family and countless friends both in Lytham and Cambridge. She brightened their lives and was very courageous.

“Linda’s kidney gave her an extra 13 years of life, which in an earlier age would not have been possible.”

Mrs Satchwell leaves four grown-up children and two grandsons. Her funeral will be held at Girton Parish Church, at 12.30pm on Friday.

Susanne Owers, director of Fundraising for Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust (ACT), said: “We’re deeply saddened to hear of the sudden loss of Michele. Her dedication to the Friends of Addenbrooke’s volunteer fund-raising group has been an inspiration. Her legacy will be felt by patients for years to come, thanks to improved services and equipment.”
