Blackpool Council announced that a road closure on Hawes Side Lane would be coming earlier this month for essential maintenance works on the bridge, with the team now on-site to begin the job.
“The essential improvements will strengthen and protect Hawes Side Lane bridge for many years to come,” read a statement from Blackpool Council. “Hawes Side Lane will be closed between Pedders Lane and Dewhurst Avenue for approximately 7 weeks, until Tuesday 7 July.

“Diversion routes are in place for vehicles, along Pedders Lane, St Annes Road, Watson Road and vice versa. Access for pedestrians will be maintained throughout the works. Thank you for your patience while we make these major improvements to Hawes Side Lane bridge.”
The programme of improvements will include essential repairs to strengthen the bridge, resurfacing work on the surrounding road, upgraded safety signage, interior refurbishment including cleaning and graffiti removal, and measures designed to extend the bridge’s lifespan while reducing the need for future disruption.
