For too long, criminal gangs have used our high streets to launder dirty money, but we’re coming for you
“For too long, criminal gangs have used our high streets to launder dirty money.”
Chris Webb, MP for Blackpool South, says that the Labour government under Prime Minister Keir Starmer is ‘sending a clear message to organised crime gangs exploiting our high streets’, promising ‘zero tolerance’ for criminal networks operating through ‘dodgy’ barber shops, vape stores and mini marts.
According to Labour, the crackdown builds on Operation Machinize, which has already resulted in hundreds of arrests, thousands of premises being visited and millions of pounds in criminal assets being seized.
“This work is already happening in our town,” said the MP. “Last month, two shops on Mayfield Avenue and Central Drive were closed for selling illicit tobacco and supplying age-restricted products. Enforcement teams seized 4,520 cigarettes and 335 illegal vapes with a retail value of £6,700.”

Chris Webb MP says that new national measures will strengthen and expand previous efforts, adding: “The investment will support increased enforcement activity on the ground and additional officer recruitment to ensure communities see a visible police presence where it matters most.
“Blackpool has enormous potential and I will continue working with enforcement agencies, local businesses and residents to ensure our high streets are not only safer but thriving once again.
“For too long, criminal gangs have used our high streets to launder dirty money, intimidate communities, and undercut honest local businesses that play by the rules. As the MP for Blackpool South, I won’t stand by while organised crime takes hold in our town.
“That’s why we’re stepping up a nationwide crackdown on rogue businesses - including sham barbers, vape shops and mini-markets linked to criminal activity. My message is clear: if you’re using our communities as a front for crime, we’re coming for you.”
