A councillor is hoping to spark a crackdown after filming two men using drugs paraphernalia in broad daylight on Blackpool's seafront.

Coun Danny Scott shot footage of two men smoking from a ‘bong’ – a pipe commonly used to take cannabis – next to the lift by the Cabin tram stop in Bispham.

Coun Scott was out on the Promenade at 3pm on a weekday afternoon and was able to film and take photographs of the two men as they smoked from the pipe.

It is not clear whether any illegal substances were involved but Coun Scott wants such seemingly minor issues to be taken far more seriously.

Coun Scott said: “I called the police and stayed there for another 10 minutes but it seems these men were allowed to carry on doing what they were doing.”

Coun Scott was amazed to see what he suspects was drug use going on in broad daylight.

“This was three in the afternoon. They didn’t seem to be bothered.

“I’ve no idea what was going through their heads but it was clear as day.”

Conservative Coun Scott, who represents Warbreck, wants to see such behaviour given greater priority, insisting it drags down the image of the town.

He said: “I feel like I’m banging my head against a brick wall. People can see this going on but nothing seems to be happening.”

Sgt Kirsty Wyatt from Lancashire Police’s neighbourhood team in Blackpool said: “This kind of behaviour is against the law and anti-social.

“We want to prevent this kind of thing in Blackpool. There are families walking in this area.

“I do not know what has happened in this case but anyone who spots this kind of behaviour should call the police so we can deal with the issue.”
