The Seasiders appeared to be heading for their second win in the space of just five days when Nathan Delfouneso put them ahead with a 66th-minute goal.

That came after a number of gilt-edged opportunities were missed, leaving Pool to hang on in the last 10 minutes and that pressure eventually told when Mark Hughes headed an injury time equaliser.

“You have the get the second goal in these occasions," McPhillips said.

“Accrington are a good side and with the demands their staff put on their players, they’re always going to be lobbing it into the box. To be fair, they did it well.

“But it’s really disappointing not to win - it feels like we’ve lost. You’ve got to get that second goal to give yourself that little bit of breathing space.

“We created two really good chances with Delf and Dodoo, but they didn’t go in.

“I didn’t think we were great first half to be fair, but we stepped it up second half. For the first half an hour we were the dominant team and we got the goal. You’ve got to go and get the next one and we paid the price at the end.

“We were knocking on the door and we eventually got the goal. They had some chances and Mark Howard has made an excellent double save.

“They ask you questions and the stats will tell you the game was even in terms of shots, possession and stuff like that. But we had the superior chances and we should have won the game.”

Want-away defender Curtis Tilt was left out of the squad for today's game, but McPhillips insists he was left out as a precaution.

It follows increased speculation that Championship side Ipswich Town could be set to seal a loan move ahead of next Friday's deadline with a view to a permanent deal in January.

McPhillips added: “Tilty played three games in a week and he reported in today a bit tight, so we didn’t want to take the chance.

“I think he’s just tight all over. Obviously he missed the game at the start of the season but since then he’s played three. The last thing we want is for him to go pop, so that was the decision.”

When asked if a deal is likely to happen this week, McPhillips said: “Not to my knowledge, we’ll see. No one has told me anyway. As far as I know he is our player.”
