Mr Maynard has urged Blackpool Council to bid for cash from the Coastal Revival Fund to bring the Cliff Lift in Bispham back into public use.

He is hoping the council will take the idea forward and put together a package in support of the feature.

He said: “The Cliff Lift is a real one off, there is nothing of its kind anywhere else in Blackpool and I think there will be few similar examples anywhere in the UK.

“It really demonstrates the spirit of innovation that has always helped keep Blackpool one step ahead of the crowd, not to mention being a fine example of 1930s architecture.”

Mr Maynard hopes if a bid cannot be prepared in time for the current round of funding it will still be of use for future allocations.

He also fully supported Blackpool Council and the resort’s civic trust in working to protect the piers. He helped arranged a meeting between council officials and ministers.

He said: “Blackpool is unique in having three working piers which are as much a part of the seaside experience today as they were when they are built.”
