'Heart-breaking how they treat us' - Blackpool fan sad Scots didn't back England in World Cup semi-final

“We would never, ever cheer for Scotland’s opponent.”

A Blackpool-born England fan who watched the World Cup semi-final in Glasgow says he was ‘disappointed’ to see so many Scotland fans supporting Argentina.

England’s World Cup dreams were dashed last night as Thomas Tuchel’s side lost 2-1 to Argentina thanks to two late goals from the Lionel Messi-inspired side. Argentina will now play Spain in Sunday’s final for the chance of winning their fourth title.

Supporters across England gathered in their millions to watch the match, but the love for Harry Kane’s side seemingly did not extend to Scotland, where fans watching the game express delight at England’s capitulation in the final minutes.

Amongst the native Scottish fans at Walkabout in Glasgow was Blackpool-born Ollie Kirkham, who said he was disappointed to hear Scots cheering for Argentina. The 37-year-old said: “It’s just a bit heart-breaking how the Scottish people treat us. We would never, ever cheer for Scotland’s opponent.”

Reflecting the long-held sporting rivalry with their opponents south of the border, many Scottish fans were seen in Argentina colours as well as Scotland shirts for the game, with fans in Walkabout contributing to the tense atmosphere during game before exploding into celebration as Argentina went ahead.

Shannon McNulty, from Clydebank, said the win was ‘absolutely brilliant’ and , when asked why she supported Argentina, the 24-year-old simply said ‘we’re Scottish’.

Seonaith MacDonald, who is 19 and from Glasgow, was watching the game while wearing an Argentina strip. Reflecting on the game at half-time, he said: “Sort of what I expected – a lot of bookings, a lot of fight. A lot of battle, a lot of grit. There’s quite a lot of history with this clash.”
