New figures have revealed the student absence rates for secondary schools across the Fylde coast, covering Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre.
The data is based on the latest statistics for the 2024/25 academic year and measures the total number of sessions missed due to absence as a percentage of all possible sessions. One session is equal to half a school day.
Nationally, the overall absence rate for 2024/25 was 6.78%, down from 7.15% the previous academic year, although still above pre-pandemic levels of 4.73% recorded in 2018/19.
Government figures show persistent absence – where pupils miss 10% or more of sessions – fell from 19.95% in 2023/24 to 18.14% in 2024/25. However, severe absence increased slightly, with 2.39% of pupils missing at least half of their sessions, compared with 2.30% the previous year.
Illness remained the main reason for absence nationally, accounting for 3.22% of possible sessions during the academic year.
