Blackpool carers' grow to eat scheme

Blackpool Carers’ Centre in Newton Drive has launched a Grow to Eat scheme but needs to raise £2,000.

The money is to be spent on seeds and tools to help the children and adult carers get together and learn how to grow their own cheap but healthy food.

And the centre is then hoping to teach the carers’ how to cook their crops to give them life lessons which will benefit them for years to come.

Faye Atherton, head of services at the centre, said: “Our new Grow to Eat project in partnership with Myerscough College, will teach both children and adults how to grow fresh fruit and vegetables, followed by cookery workshops to turn their produce into healthy meals for the whole family.

“Funds raised will provide essential gardening equipment to enable us to deliver this project to as many carers as possible.”

The charity is now aiming to sign up its supporters who can do so at www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/blackpoolcarers to help boost their fundraising for free.

Fay added: “The idea is to give children and families the opportunity to learn about growing, healthy eating etc and to spend positive family time together tending to the ‘patch’.

“The fruit and veg that is grown will then be used in cooking sessions on site where families plan and create meals together within our lovely kitchen.”
