Jane Djuritschek set up her Cake-a-cabana shop on Church Street in 2014 to provide a range of cakes and cupcakes for special occasions.

With years of experience working in school cookery lessons and encouraging young people to bake, Jane decided to turn her passion for baking into a profession, by setting up her own shop with help from Blackpool Council’s Get Started scheme.

Just less than two years later and the colourful shop now also doubles as a baking and design studio, where Jane can prepare her displays, including special cake bouquets made up of crafted cupcakes, presented as part of a stunning table piece.

Jane said: “The cake bouquet idea has taken off with customers ordering them for every occasion from birthdays to retirement gifts and everything inbetween.

“It’s a great way to give a useful gift that can be shared with everyone involved.

“It is particularly popular as a group gift for birthday parties, hen dos and girls’ nights in.

“One customer used them as table centre pieces at her wedding – apparently the guests didn’t notice that they could eat the display until the bride tucked into hers at the top table!

“I’m very pleased that the business is steadily growing and that all the hard work is slowly paying off. I’m always looking for new ideas and fresh designs to make sure I can offer customers the best service. I’m enjoying being my own boss and pleased that I made the decision to go it alone.”

Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for business, Coun Mark Smith said: “Jane is another great example of the small business surge that we’ve got in Blackpool.”
