Bispham Primary School opens gates for its annual gala

Families, staff and members of the local community gathered at St Bernadette’s Catholic Primary School, on Devonshire Road, for a day of reflection and activities.

This year’s gala commemorated 100 years since the end of the First World War and a century since the formation of the Royal Air Force.

A mass was held at the neighbouring St Bernadette’s Church followed by a parade by children dressed in red, white and blue to the school playground.

Denise Duke, senior family support worker and chairman of the Home School Association, which organised the event, said: “A mass was held in church and then the children took part in a parade to the playground where there was a service to remember the fallen and the end of the First World War.

“It was a really nice event, full of community spirit.

“Our nursery and church were involved so it really brought everyone together.

“And we raised more than £2,000 for school funds which is the best we have done for a couple of years.

“We always have a theme so this year we decided to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War and the formation of the Royal Air Force.”

A standard bearer from South Fylde RAF Association attended along with former and current service personnel.

Denise added: “There were donkey rides, a bouncy castle, tombolas and raffles. We also had a barbecue and refreshment stall as well as hook-a-duck and an assault course.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported the gala and helped to set it up and run it.”
