Baines students’ pass rate delight

Almost half of the 70 students, who studied at the close knit sixth form, gained top grades at A level.

And the Poulton school is delighted to see for the fourth year running, improved results on the year before.

Head of Sixth Form Louise Oliver said: “We are once again delighted with our A level and AS level results with almost half of students gaining the top grades at A level.

“This builds on our positive Sixth Form judgement from OFSTED in May and is just reward for all the hardwork of our staff and students.

“We encourage our students to be ambitious in their choices and they have worked so hard, we are extremely proud of them.

“We’d like to wish all of our students the very best for the future and congratulate them on their excellent achievements.”

There was a mixture of relief and excitement among the students picking up their results.

Some had already checked online to find out if they had received their university places before they had found out their results.

And most agreed that knowing whether they had received their places watered down the anxiety of opening the brown envelopes to reveal their grades.

Eighteen year old Alex Lee was delighted with her results, which were better than she expected.

With an A star in English Language, B’s in geography, biology and general studies, Alex is going to University College in Birmingham to study nutrition. She also gained a merit in ACA Baccalaureate, with a pass in the enrichment element of the qualification and a B in the extended project qualification.

She said: “I’m really pleased, I didn’t want to open it at first but I did better than expected.

“I’m really interested in food science and the effect of food on our bodies. The course will offer various career routes and I will have a science degree.”

Fellow student Chris Pickles said his A level studies were the hardest thing he has ever done.

But his hard work certainly paid off and can’t wait to get going with his degree in medicine, which he will study for at Leeds University.

Chris, 18, gained three A grades in biology, chemistry and geography.

He said: “It was hard and I had to study long hours and I was absolutely whacked after the exams, but it has all been worth it.

“I knew I wanted to study medicine but a week long work experience placement at a GP surgery confirmed it was what I wanted to do.

“I’ve told my parents and they are over the moon!”

Danielle Downing, who is 19, says she is just relieved to finally have her results.

She says she had put so much work into her studies and is happy with her grades of A in history and religious studies and B’s in biology and general studies. She also gained a B in an extended project A/S level.

“I’m happy, it’s what I needed and I’m going to Lancaster University to study history,” she said.

“I’d like to go into the teaching profession, but law lends itself to the subject too which is a different route.”

“My family are really proud of me, I’m the first one in the family to go to university.

“The studying was hard, I had lots of late nights and early starts revising and I drunk lots of coffee!

“As much as I hated it, I’m so happy.”
