Organisers say 2,000 took part in the race, raising a total of £50,000 so far for Trinity Hospice, with sponsorship money still to come in.

There was an exciting tussle for first place, with winner Larry Poole from Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde Athletics Club clocking in an impressive 34 minutes and just beating Alex Garrod on the line.

Following the elite runners were hundreds of fun runners, some in fancy dress. The costumes included pirates, Where’s Wally, a Mexican and even a gorilla.

Among the runners were a team from Blackpool’s Aspire Academy, whose principle Lisa Shuttleworth-Brown said: “We are really delighted to be taking part.

“We have had staff members affected by cancer, so we are there to support them and their families as well as Trinity Hospice, which is absolutely amazing.”

Trinity’s head of fundraising Linzi Young said: “Every year the Fun Run continues to bring such a wonderful atmosphere to the Promenade.

“There’s always such a buzz around the start line and people are here right to the end to cheer on each and every one of the runners.

“We are absolutely overwhelmed by the amount raised this year and by how many people have shown up and given it their all for our charity.

“It costs £7m each year to keep our doors open and services running free of charge to everyone who needs us, and we couldn’t do that without the support of people at events like this.”
