Andy's 400-mile trip - on a lawnmower

A Lancashire prison officer has travelled over 400 miles on a lawn mower in his attempt to get into the Guinness World Records book.

Andy Maxfield, from Inskip, arrived at his home village on Thursday night as he kicked off the third day of his mammoth 874-mile ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End. He made it to Preston on Friday.

The gruelling expedition is being undertaken on a John Deere tractor, which has a maximum speed of 10 miles per hour, in order to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Despite battling against adverse weather conditions, Andy is hoping to complete the trip by Sunday.

“It’s been going really well but it’s been very wet, particularly when we were travelling through Scotland,” he said.

“It was a bit demoralising because it would stop raining for a bit and I would dry off, but then it’d just start all over again.

“I’ve been sleeping in the van, but the back of it is all wet now.”

Andy, who works at Kirkham prison, was initially planning to take it in turns driving with his 23-year-old daughter Kathryn so that he could catch up on sleep.

However, Guinness have since said that it will only count as a record if one person is driving, meaning Andy has been forced to keep going on minimal sleep.

He said: “The biggest challenge has been the pot holes. These things only travel at nine miles per hour so they are not designed for roads.
