All smiles for Lytham Club Day

Hundreds of people had wrapped up warm to line the streets as the long procession wound its way along Clifton Street, Central Beach and then back along the buzzing main high street.

Smiling youngsters waved from their colourful floats, while dancers and bands showed off their talents as they moved along the streets.

Len Curtis, founder of charity Donna’s Dream House, paraded his Olympic Torch during the procession behind Lytham St Annes Sea Cadets and Scouts.

Belly dancers added a touch of sparkle to the line-up, which also featured a couple of Mad Hatter’s Tea Parties from Forest Drive Nursery and Lytham Methodist Church.

The Olympic Games was a popular theme with Clifton Lodge Nursery’s float adorned with pictures designed by the tiny tots, and children from St Peter’s Church dressed up in Ancient Greek robes.

Spectator Bill Ward, 82, of The Leylands, Lytham, said: “I think it’s a wonderful occasion to keep up annually and I hope it doesn’t fade away like a lot of things do.

“It encourages the young people to work together and play together.

“I’ve seen it every year for 20 years and it’s wonderful. There is such a nice atmosphere.”

It came as no surprise that Alicia Crossley’s fabulous Titanic costume bagged her first prize in the fancy dress contest. The seven-year-old, from Lytham, who was dressed as the captain of the ship, which she had made, said: “It took six weeks to make.

“I’m really pleased with my prize. I like the procession and I’m really happy to be taking part.”

The fun continued with screaming children and teenagers enjoying the fairground’s huge rides, and the crowning of the Rose Queen, 13-year-old Sian Thompson.

Vintage cars were also parked up on the Green for residents to admire.

John Porter, chairman of Lytham Club Day, said: “It went really well. I’d like to say thank you to the people who provided the floats and took part in the parade, and to everyone who lined the streets and showed their appreciation.”
