Food hygiene ratings give diners an insight into the standards of food safety found during inspections at restaurants, cafés, takeaways, pubs and other food businesses.
The Food Standards Agency's national scheme, which is administered by local authorities, scores premises from 0 to 5 based on hygiene standards at the time of inspection, rather than the quality of the food or customer service.
Inspectors assess how food is handled, prepared and stored, the cleanliness of the premises, and how businesses manage food safety procedures. A rating of five means hygiene standards are "very good", while a zero indicates that urgent improvement is required. Businesses can improve their rating by addressing issues identified during an inspection and requesting a revisit.
