Food hygiene ratings provide diners with an insight into the food safety standards found during inspections at restaurants, cafés, takeaways, pubs and other food businesses.
The national scheme, operated by the Food Standards Agency and administered by local authorities, rates premises from 0 to 5 based on the hygiene standards found at the time of inspection. The ratings do not reflect the quality of the food or the level of customer service.
During inspections, officers assess how food is handled, prepared and stored, as well as the cleanliness of the premises and how effectively businesses manage their food safety procedures.
A rating of five indicates that hygiene standards are "very good", while a rating of zero means urgent improvement is required. Businesses can work to improve their rating by addressing issues identified during an inspection and subsequently requesting a revisit.
