Work to re-develop the iconic St George Hotel, which stood at the junction of Poulton Street, Moor Street and Station Road in Kirkham, has finally been completed.

The development by Progress Housing, based in St Annes, has been named St George Place, with the official opening of the new site, which includes 12 flats for affordable housing, led by Mayor of Fylde Coun Linda Nulty, Mayor of Kirkham Coun Liz Oades, and Fylde MP, Mark Menzies.

Mr Menzies said: “It was great to have the opportunity to look around the new development and I was impressed by the high standard to which it has been completed.

“Many people wanted to try to keep some remnants of the old building but unfortunately it was in such a state of disrepair that proved impossible. I know Fylde Council’s planning team spent a lot of time getting the design of the new development just right and I think they have done a great job.

“This is a landmark site on a key junction in Kirkham and it was important that the building continued to reflect that.

“Having spoken to a number of residents who have already moved into the new apartments I know they are very happy with what has been built. I hope they continue to enjoy their new homes for many years to come.”

The pub closed in December 2010 due to economic decline, and soon fell into disrepair. Progress Housing Group and Melrose Construction bought the site in December 2012 before its re-development.
