It’s no April Fool as diamond duo reach milestone

April Fools’ Day may traditionally be an annual custom for pranksters to play practical jokes – but the day means a lot more for a Poulton couple celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary on Thursday.

Brendene and Keith Hardy are both hugely involved in the world of gymnastics – and it is their love of the sport that they say is the secret to their 60 years of marriage.

The couple met at the Co-Op Drama Group in Blackpool in May 1958,and married at St Stephen-on-the-Cliffs Church in North Shore on April 1, 1961.

The couple have two sons, Steve and Karl, six grandchildren and two step-grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and another due in May.

In 1972 they started coaching classes in gymnastics at what was then known as Bispham Tech College on Ashfield Road in Bispham.

British Gymnastics and have been awarded for their commitment. To this day they are still involved.

“My dad was originally an electrician but went on to be a PE teacher, and for most of their lives they have both been teachers in the Blackpool area before retiring.”

Keith, 83, said: “We both have similar interests, education and gymnastics.”

And Brendene, 79, added: “We make things work.”
