NHS trusts in the region were picked as one of seven areas to lead the way, and now want a quarter of those newly diagnosed with the condition to join the national ‘Join Dementia Research’ register.

The register was set up to help those with dementia, as well as helping to prevent future cases, the county’s mental health trust Lancashire Care said.

Consultant psychiatrist for older adults, Dr Mark Worthington, said: “The only way we can beat dementia is by investing and taking part in research. In the past, opportunities for patient and public involvement in dementia research has not been actively promoted. It is really important we give people this chance, and it’s a great privilege for us, as a team and organisation, to be able to support people interested in dementia research to take part.”

Fylde MP Mark Menzies said he is ‘determined’ his constituency will be the first to recruit 25 per cent of dementia patients to the programme, and said he has ‘always been passionate’ about helping those suffering with dementia.
