Dentist earns highest honour

Robert Bland of the Wrea Green Dental Practice has been accepted as a Fellow of the Faculty of General Dental Practice of the Royal College of Surgeons.

Robert qualified in dentistry at Liverpool University in 1985. He spent his first four years working in the Manchester area before opening his first practice in Fleetwood in 1990.

Within 10 years Robert had built up a group of practices in the Blackpool area which were acquired by a corporate dental chain. He bought a practice in Warrington but then having lived for many years in Wrea Green and always having the dream of owning the village practice ,when the previous owner decided to sell two years ago, he could just not resist.

He gained the diploma of membership from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2008.

He followed that by achieving his Masters Degree in Dental Implantology at Sheffield University, carrying out original research on the prevention of surgical site infections.

He is a part time examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons in London. He also sits as a clinical panel member for the General Dental Council’s Dental Complaints Service and is an appraiser for the North Lancashire PCT.

When he is not at the practice, Robert lectures on the subject of dental implants and mentors young dentists who are just beginning to place their own implants. .

He said: “I was thrilled to be told, that I am to be made a Fellow of the Faculty of General Dental Practice of the Royal College of Surgeons!

“The Fellowship is the highest award offered by the Faculty.”
