On Thursday 10th October 2024, Blackpool Gateway welcomed top athlete Danny Butler into school.

From the Peak District’s edge to performing for the Queen at the Platinum Jubilee Pageant, Danny’s journey is one of resilience and passion.

Told he might never walk again, he pivoted from motorcycle trials to become a top cyclist, inspired by his father. With accolades including European Champion, five-time British Elite Champion, and UCI World #3, Danny has proudly represented Team GB for over a decade.

On the day, he led a sponsored fitness circuit with all pupils, followed by a motivational assembly, and Q&A session. The event inspired the pupils to be more physically active, but just as importantly, encouraged them to discover and pursue their passion in life.

The day connected the pupils to an extraordinary athlete role model and raised money for new sports equipment in the school, as well as supporting both athletes and para-athletes, so that they can continue to inspire the next generation.

Hayley Ferguson, Year 1 Teacher and PE Lead at Gateway, said: "Danny’s visit was both inspiring and engaging for all of our children here at Gateway. The children thoroughly enjoyed the day and have been able to raise funds to support our sports provision. We would like to thank Danny for his enthusiastic and humorous approach which captivated us all".
