Primary pupils win safety fight reward

The students from Baines Endowed, Stanah, Northfold, Manor Beach, Royles Brook and Thornton Primary are the proud winners of a Community Education Award.

The national Community Education Awards honours the outstanding work of education authorities that go the extra mile in promoting personal development and health education across 17 categories, including environmental conservation, lifestyle, and technology.

The Thornton and Cleveleys pupils won the Transport and Road Safety Awareness Award for their Parkingbusters scheme.

The group was set up more than two years ago when headteachers highlighted problems with parents parking in places where they were endangering the children.

Pupils have carried out a variety of initiatives in the last two years including poster competitions, banners outside school and the designing of a mascot.

They have also written to various officials about the issues, distributed leaflets and highlighted problems in school assembled.

Among those who responded to the group’s letters was David Cameron.

Alison Wilson, headteacher at Northfold Primary said: “Our Parkingbuster children have taken on the task with great determination.

“All our schools are extremely proud of what they have achieved.

“Hopefully our new representatives for the start of the next academic year will  continue to be just as effective in getting the message across to their parents about how  important the safety of  our children is around  schools just before and after the school day.”
