The event, which was due to take place on Sunday June 6, was cancelled by the college "given the current situation facing the country."

In 2019, the country fair was shortlisted in the "Event of the Year" category at the Lancashire Tourism Awards, praised for its demonstrations, shows and interactive activities.

Combining the event with an open day for prospective students also gave them the chance to explore Myerscough's campus, near Bilsborrow, Preston, and speak to tutors and students.

A spokesman for Myerscough College said: "We are bitterly disappointed to have to take this course of action, but feel an early decision is in everybody’s best interests, given the current situation facing the country and the uncertainty of what the upcoming months may hold.

"The event is proudly one of Lancashire's premier summer tourism days out. Given the overwhelming success of our 2019 event, which was shortlisted in the category of Event of the Year at the Lancashire Tourism Awards, and the cancellation in 2020, we were so excited for what we were due to bring you for 2021.

"We had considered the possibility of moving the event to later in the year, but logistically this was very difficult, and the ongoing uncertainty of when the situation might return to normal means planning is impossible.

"A large number of people who purchased a ticket for 2020, rolled them over. If you wish to roll over your ticket again, you do not need to do anything and we'll see you next year.

"Should you not be able to attend next year and would prefer a refund please email us at [email protected] with your name and email address that you ordered your tickets with.

"Everybody who has booked an advance ticket should receive an email from us explaining further."
