Blackpool South MP Gordon Marsden MP said: “I want to congratulate Blackpool students for all the hard work they have put into their GCSEs - and to thank their teachers, schools and families for their support and encouragement in the run up to what are now increasingly GCSE results based on one year’s exams.

“It’s encouraging to see some really excellent results in English and Maths across Blackpool and the Fylde - reflecting the solid achievements of both secondary students and their schools and colleges.

“But it’s important to remember that GCSEs are not just part of a conveyor belt to A levels and university.

“Whatever people’s results have been there are a range of possibilities they should consider as well as A-levels - BTECs and other practical qualifications as well as the increasingly important range of Apprenticeships, plus other options to gain qualifications while in work or training.

However, he added: “I am concerned that the narrowly exam based system which this Government is now bringing in should not crowd out creative
subjects.”
