Head at historic Poulton school to step down

Roddy McCowan, the headteacher at Baines School in Poulton, is stepping down after 17 years, parents have been told.

He will leave at the end of the school year in July, with a replacement set to be announced in spring next year.

“There will be ample opportunity for more detailed words of reflection and farewell nearer the time, but I do have to emphasize how much I have truly enjoyed and valued my time here at Baines, and that it has been a privilege to have worked within and led such a unique and caring school,” he wrote in a letter sent home.

“Obviously, there is a strong note of sadness in leaving behind all the pupils and the excellent staff with whom I work, but this has been a carefully considered decision with the governors being aware of the need for succession planning.

“I will be continuing to work in the wider sphere of secondary education in the future for what I hope are several years to come.”

Until July, ‘it is absolutely business as usual’ at the school, in Highcross Road, Mr McCowan added.

Historic Baines, founded in 1717, is working to improve after a disappointing Ofsted inspection last year.
