A Cleveleys primary school is planning to create a multi-use game area to try and ensure more of its pupils stay active.

Northfold Primary School, on Ringway, says some older pupils are above the national average measurements for children and it is looking to combat this.

The school intends to create the fenced-off, anti-vandal facility on a part of its playing field which is poorly used, so it won’t diminish any existing sports activities.

An application to create the amenity has been lodged with Wyre planners by schools authority Lancashire County council.

In the planning document, the school says the multi use games area (MUGA) will be used primarily for PE lessons during the day, at break and lunchtimes and also by after school clubs but not at weekends.

The school states it was “submitting the application to improve outside facilities so that more children are active and can access more space for exercise and sports. “It will also enable after-school use for extra-curricular activities and tournaments with other schools.

“Based on historical data for national child measurement, our school goes from below local and national averages for Reception children to above for Year 6.

“We are trying to increase physical activity to try and combat this.”

The school says it has introduced ‘The daily mile’ which could be carried out within the proposed MUGA, allowing more classes to partake safely.

The school, which is temporarily closed, makes no mention of the cost of the amenity at this stage.
