The bargains shop, on Highfield Road, announced its plans to close this week with a sign thanking locals for their years of loyal custom.

A spokesman for B&M said: "We’re sadly closing because it’s the end of the lease and the approximate date for closure is July 25."

Scott Benton, MP for Blackpool South, where the branch is located, said he was 'very concerned' about the closure plans.

He said: "Many local people rely upon the store and it will be sorely missed. I’ll be contacting their head office to urge them to reconsider this decision and to discuss the implications of this for the people who work there if the store does indeed close."

There are currently 21 members of staff employed at the Highfield Road store. B&M said they have all been offered jobs in other local branches.

Following the closure, the nearest B&M for South Shore shoppers will be on Vicarage Lane. There is also a B&M shop on Church Street in Blackpool town centre.
