The Singapore-based Fragrance Group has lodged 35 documents setting out ambitious proposals for a 143-bedroom hotel on the site of the former St Chad’s Hotel which was demolished earlier this year.

Full planning permission is being sought to redevelop land between The Promenade, Woodfield Street, St Chad’s Road and Bolton Street.

The number of rooms in the proposed six storey property has been reduced to 143 from a total of 184 which was initially put forward.

Other facilities would also include a ground floor restaurant and lounge spaces for guests along with meeting rooms and a dedicated guest car park to the rear with secondary entrance.

Liverpool-based architects Falconer Chester Hall have drawn up art deco inspired designs on behalf of Fragrance Hotels, which also owns The Imperial Hotel and The Lyndene Hotel in Blackpool.

A design statement says: “The hotel is proposed as a new landmark building and catalyst for future development along the promenade.

“The design draws inspiration from the local vernacular, including the sea, sand and historical context.

“The building is proposed in a simple yet elegant rectangular form that is clean and neat.

“It is rich in detail and proposed to be constructed from high quality materials.

“A landscape zone is proposed to the front complete with elements of local artwork, green infrastructure and lighting.

“Level access is proposed throughout with lifts and hotel reception immediately accessible from a generous, double height entrance lobby and lounge fronting the promenade.”

It is proposed to offer two types of guest room – standard double and twin rooms, including a number of linked rooms to provide family suites.

Land in front of the hotel has been earmarked for an art zone with dedicated areas set aside to display work by local artists in the form of sculpture, seating and lighting.

Proposals to redevelop the site were first unveiled in the summer when a public consultation was held.

The Chad’s Hotel had been closed since 2021, and was bulldozed in May along with the Lyric Hotel, Regency Apartments and the Seaside Fish and Chip Shop to make way for redevelopment.

The application will go before Blackpool Council planners at a future date.
