Drivers have told of spending up to an hour in queues thanks to temporary traffic lights in Breck Road, Poulton, which have reportedly caused major tailbacks between there and nearby Thornton.

Drainage work has been carried out in the street by the county council for the past three weeks, before Electricity North West began emergency work nearby on Monday.

Coun Kerry Jones, who represents Stanah on Wyre Council, said she wants to know why the works were allowed to cause such problems – and why motorists weren’t given better notice.

She said: “There are a lot of people angry about this. It took me 40 minutes to get into Poulton on Tuesday and I know it was the same for many. I wonder if the people who plan these works have any idea how it is going to impact on people in the next town.”

A county council spokesman said the lights were turned off during rush hour for first two weeks, but had to be left on last week because of the nature of the work.

There are still several days’ work left to do, but it has been suspended until the emergency work is finished – which should be tomorrow, he said.

He said engineers cannot ‘restrict their work to off-peak’ because a property is currently without power.

He added: “We have worked with them to limit the duration of the work and will manually control the traffic signals at peak times to minimise disruption.”
