The reopening of a KFC store in Blackpool has led to the area becoming a 'disgusting' dumping ground for fast-food litter, according to residents.

Images from one local resident show dozens of red and white cartons from the fried chicken chain strewn across the car park on Devonshire road.

Queues of traffic and bins overflowing with boxes and soft drink cups have become an eye-sore for residents since KFC reopened its drive-thru on Tuesday, May 5.

Many have now taken to social media to express their anger at the situation.

One resident on Facebook posted: "People of Blackpool sort yourselves out I live on this street and the rubbish is disgusting.

"Not only have we had to put up with the queues, car damage and loud music but now this."

Another posted: "I live just around the corner and I must admit I've never seen it this bad before.

"Yes there has been the odd bit but you get it anywhere with a KFC and McDonald's ect.

"The staff are meant to go and pick it up in the mornings and when the store closes, but the last time there was some on the street we were told it's up to council."

One resident suggested the bins should be made bigger, with a flap to stop seagulls and other animals from picking rubbish out of the bin.

They said: "They need bigger bins like the ones in the rock gardens which would allow more rubbish to be deposited without overflowing, and I would suggest adding a flap to the rubbish entrance."

Customers have now been encouraged to take their litter with them or to put it in the bin where possible by KFC.

A spokesperson for KFC said: "We’re really pleased to see the people of Blackpool have missed us and we’re glad to be back - but with a lot of our cleaning partners still on furlough, it a little trickier than usual to stay nice and tidy.

"Being a good neighbour is important to us so we’ll carry on upping our regular litter picks, and we’d encourage our guests to take their litter with them or put it in the bin where possible."

Large queues formed after the store unexpectedly reopened its drive-thru on May 5.

Drivers ready for their fried chicken-fix flocked to the fast food branch on Devonshire Road despite warnings by the chain not to all "rush at once".
