Development, the smoking ban, changing social habits and tougher economic times have all accounted for hostelries we fondly remember from years ago, bringing a variety of new uses for the sites they previously occupied.
Here we look at a few instances around Blackpool, then and now...

The New Anchor was replaced in 2007 with a Lidl supermarket, which has become a busy destination for shoppers, so much so that in 2021, Lidl applied, unsuccessfully, for planning permission to demolish two adjacent houses to allow room for a car park extension. Photo: staff
9. Yates's Wine Lodge, Talbot Square
Do you remember Yates's Wine Lodge in Blackpool town centre? It was a landmark which stood at the unction of Talbot Road and Clifton Street until it was devastated by fire in 2009. The distinctive building had originally been a library and after Yates's founder Peter Yates rented out a room offering refreshment it proved so populkar so quickly that Yates's Wine Lodges were born. The fire in Februrary 2009 was rackled by 100 firefighters and Yates's ended up moving their town centre premises to Market Street. Photo: submit
10. ...now a Premier Inn
After years of being derelict, the former Yates's site was developed to house a Premier Inn hotel which opened in 2021. It cost £7.1m, has been designed to reflect the heritage of the site and has a restaurant and bar on the ground floor. Photo: submit
11. The Hop Inn
The Hop Inn, at the junction of Cookson Street and King Street, dated from the 1860s, when it was originally the Veevers Arms and closed in February 2020 after being bought by Blackpool Council from the Greene King brewery in 2017. Photo: submit
12. ...now a dental surgery
The front of The Hop Inn was locally listed and has therefore been preserved in its new guise as the King Street Dental Surgery. The building is at the heart of the town centre redevelopment area and as a new hotel takes shape at Talbot Gateway, work is going on to create an adjacent £100m office block. Photo: submit
