Part of the Morrisons car park off Squires Gate Lane in South Shore has made way for the new development and the construction of the units are reaching the final stages.

The 350sqm Nandos restaurant along with the Starbucks and another small shop, have been built between the existing supermarket petrol station and car wash and the main road which runs along the retail park.

Work began on the site in October last year and two new entrances from the car park onto Squires Gate Lane were created during the early stages of the development.

Morrisons submitted the application for the project back in 2018 and the plans proposed that more than 40 people could be employed across the development.

Around 50 car park spaces have made way for the retail units, which according to a design brief is an area which is hardly used by its customers for parking.

It added: “The current proposals represent significant investment in the area by WM Morrisons Supermarkets PLC and will promote the more efficient use of an underutilised area of the existing car park with a range of employment generating uses.”

Morrisons also believes the development will be good for the people of South Shore.

The design brief continued: “The application proposals will also provide enhanced local facilities for local residents, shoppers and motorists on Squires Gate Lane and would generate a number of job opportunities for local people and the employment and economic benefits associated with the proposals should be afforded significant weight in the assessment of the proposals.”

Just a few months after construction started on the site, plans for another coffee retailer on the retail park were given the green light.

Blackpool Council bosses granted planning permission for a Costa Coffee shop to be built on the car park next to Halfords, on the adjacent side of the South Shore retail park.

The development, by LS Retail Warehousing Limited, will comprise of a 167sqm building, a revised car park layout and a drive through area.

Both Nandos and Starbucks were contacted for comment.
