Apprentices at graduation with a difference

A pair of young apprentices from BAE Systems Warton have had the graduation ceremony of a lifetime – a flight in the back seat of a Fylde coast-built jet used to train the world’s elite pilots.

Nathan Hughes, 23, who lives near Preston, and Manchester’s Oliver Dry, 21, got a ride in the back seat of a Hawk trainer jet, following in the footsteps of the RAF up-and-coming pilots.

The pair have just completed their three-year apprenticeships with BAE Systems and have spent the final six months of their training in the Hawk manufacturing line at Warton.

The company has announced its intention to take on 568 apprentices across the group, the highest intake since it was formed some 14 years ago and 181 more places than offered last year.
