Aldi Stores Ltd lodged plans with Wyre Council to extend its Poulton Road, Fleetwood store on March 17, because the current store was "not large enough."

On Monday (July 20) the council gave the proposed development the go-ahead.

The supermarket will be extended by an extra 133 square metres to the front and side, in a bid to create more space for shoppers.

More car parking spaces will also be added.

In planning documents, architects The Harris Group said: "The proposed approach is to provide an extension to the front and side of the building with an enlarged sales and amenity area, maintaining the existing site entrance and creating some larger car parking spaces.

"The side elevation neighbouring the existing Gee Tee’s unit remains unaffected to reduce the impact on the car park and shop entrance."

"The layout has been sensitively designed to ensure minimal impact to the neighbouring properties."

Vehicle and pedestrian access to the supermarket will stay the same.

A start date for the extension has not been confirmed.
