Permission for an extension to the store, on Poulton Road, was granted by Wyre Council in March last year.

Aldi said the building was "not large enough" to meet the needs of shoppers in Fleetwood.

A spokesman for Aldi said: "The store is now closed for refurbishment and we anticipate construction will be complete this summer."

Plans showed the store, which is currently closed while under construction, would be extended by an extra 133 square metres to the front and side.

More car parking spaces will also be added.

In planning documents, architects The Harris Group said: "The proposed approach is to provide an extension to the front and side of the building with an enlarged sales and amenity area, maintaining the existing site entrance and creating some larger car parking spaces.

"The side elevation neighbouring the existing Gee Tee’s unit remains unaffected to reduce the impact on the car park and shop entrance.

"The layout has been sensitively designed to ensure minimal impact to the neighbouring properties."

Vehicle and pedestrian access to the supermarket will stay the same.
