Blackpool already has the most famous set of Illuminations in the world – how about these for the best indoor ones too.
Illuminasia, a 4,000 square metre light show in the Winter Gardens, is officially switched on tonight, the big moment screened live on the BBC’s The One Show.
Billed as the world’s largest indoor illuminations display, and created by a team of 55 Chinese artists who have been based in the resort for the last three months, it is the first new attraction to open in Blackpool for 25 years.
And the man behind the scheme, John Conway, believes it will be a huge hit.
“Everyone who’s seen it so far thinks it is excellent and the main comment we get is ‘it’s not what I was expecting – it is fantastic’,” said Mr Conway, who has staged shows all over the world.
“That sums it up for me. We publicise Blackpool as being a world class attraction and yet we don’t believe it. And actually it is and we are.
“We have spent a full year making sure Illuminasia is a wonderful piece of entertainment that gives total value for money and I am confident that when people come they will say ‘yes, this is absolutely brilliant’.”
Illuminasia consists of a series of giant 3D structures and shining lights. Visitors enter via a giant ‘kalightascope’ tunnel before walking through six different time zones, from Land of the Giants to the Underwater Fun room.
The final room, Wonders of the World, features the Tower of Pisa and the Statue of Liberty, as well as a 45-foot high Blackpool Tower.
There will also be live entertainment, including a state-of-the-art laser show.
It is hoped the attraction will pull in between 150,000 and 200,000 visitors in its first year of trading.
“And that’s a key thing too,” added Mr Conway. “We aren’t a seasonal attraction – we are here every day and indoors, so people will come even if the Blackpool weather isn’t too good.
“That means we will be giving people a reason to come to the resort every single day of the year, which is good for the whole town and everyone in it.”
Tickets are £12.95 for adults, £9.95 children, and are available from www.illuminasia.co.uk
