Fylde coast skating sensation Dan Whiston is recovering after coming within a whisker of serious injury as he and Hayley Tamaddon battled through to the Dancing on Ice semi-final.

The pair impressed the judges with their ice dance to The Conga, scoring their first two 10s this series, giving them a total score of 39.

And with the vote they received from the public – desite a shaky start with the solo skate by Hayley, of Bispham – they skated through to the next round, the semi-final on Sunday, in the final ever series of the hit ITV show.

But it wasn’t without incident, after during a daring lift in their performance, the blade of Hayley’s skate caught Dan’s ear – leaving him pouring with blood.

The former Hot Ice star even had to have his ear glued back together after the show.

Dan, from Poulton, told The Gazette: “There’s a pretty big nick in it and it’s been glued now, so it’s a bit lumpy, but it’s OK.

“I don’t even know how it happened. I hadn’t actually noticed and when we finished dancing I could feel something running down my neck, I thought it was sweat.

“But then I hugged Hayley and afterwards noticed there was blood on her face.

“It was no price to pay really, for the amazing performance Hayley gave, it was worth it. It feels fantastic to have made it through to the semi-final, we can’t believe how lucky we are to have got to do the show a second time together. We are loving every single minute.

“Hayley just gets better and better every week.”

The pair will be training hard this week to prepare, including for a ‘flying’ routine, using an aerial harness.

Dan added: “Hayley was really sick last time we did the flying, so we will have the sick buckets at the ready!

“It could be a tough week. But we are ready to work hard, we are enjoying it so much and so grateful for all the support from everybody at home.”
