Blackpool Opera House is to host an exclusive premiere of Peter Kay’s new sitcom - his return to TV screens after an 11-year break.
The funnyman will be back at the venue on Saturday, March 28 to screen all six episodes of the new BBC series Car Share.
The show was commissioned by the BBC two years ago, as an iPlayer-first venture, and filming has taken place in Greater Manchester.
The screening of Peter Kay’s Car Share will take place in the Winter Gardens’ theatre in aid of Chorley children’s hospice Derian House.
Bolton-born Kay - a self-confessed fan of Blackpool - will introduce the series on the night.
It will be Kay’s third official trip to Blackpool in seven months after he ‘switched on the big light’ to launch the Illuminations and hosted two sell-out shows at the Opera House in November in aid of Salford Women’s Refuge.
Car Share follows the journeys of supermarket workers John and Kayleigh who are paired up when the company introduced a car share scheme and they are forced to commute each day to work.
But will assistant manager John, played by Kay who also directs the series, get along with promotions rep Kayleigh, played by Sian Gibson.
When the show was commissioned Kay said: “To be finally working with the BBC on a new comedy is a great opportunity. And the idea of two people car sharing to work each day really appealed to me, as it highlights the comedy in the minutiae of the daily trek and allows the spiralling conversations of life to unwind in all of their glory.”
A short clip from Car Share has been seen in the BBC’s promotional trailer for 2015, showing Kay in a tight vest.
The stand up comedian has just completed a two-week run of sell-out live Phoenix Nights shows at Manchester Arena, for Comic Relief.
This is the second major announcement for the Church Street complex this week, after it was revealed that David Hasselhoff will front the world premiere of new musical Last Night A DJ Saved My Life in October. Tickets for that go on sale at 10am today at www.wintergardensblackpool.co.uk.
