A Blackpool chip shop which has been run by the same family for 24 years has been crowned the best in the resort.

The Harrowside Chippy has been voted the best in town by Gazette readers in our 2015 Chip Shop of the Year competition.

Readers praised it for the quality of its food, the cleanliness of the premises, the atmosphere and the friendly service.

The Miller family, Sue, Andrew, daughter Ashleigh and son Thomas, were delighted to have won.

Sue Miller said: “It was fantastic to win especially since it was down to the votes of our customers and members of the public.

“I would like to thank them all for voting and for their continued support.

“I also have to thank our wonderful staff who take real care with everything they do.

“I think the key thing is to only use the best produce. We source everything we can locally but it has to be good so we only use certain suppliers.

“We are a very traditional chippy. We have seen the fads over the years, the deep fried mars bars etc, but we concentrate on the best loved chipshop staples.

“Our customers are very loyal and many have been coming here for years.

“We have regulars from Manchester and Leeds, people who come to visit their relatives here, and we know what their order is going to be before they ask.

“When we first bought the shop it was half the size it is now with a cafe at the back.

“Then we expanded into the next door shop and we now have a 40 seat cafe with a big tropical fish tank full of Malawis which have just had babies.

“The table near the fish tank is our most popular especially with families with small children. But I still think of it as our little family chip shop.

“We have had three different ranges and a new shop front over the years, it is important to invest in your business.”

The competition, designed to highlight all that’s best about traditional seaside food, ran throughout July in The Gazette and 24 chippies were nominated.

Members of the public were asked to vote for their favourite in a phone-in and the Harrowside Chippy came out on top.
