Stage star Elaine Paige has helped Lytham Festival track down the ‘nation’s favourite’ musical theatre song.
The classic anthem You’ll Never Walk Alone, from Carousel, was hailed as the favourite among 2,000 over 50s surveyed.
You’ll Never Walk Alone’s popularity is boosted beyond the theatrical world by its association with Liverpool FC, and a cover version by Gerry And The Pacemakers.
The questionnaire was carried out by Lytham Festival, online via the Survey Monkey website, contacting people on the festival and Lowther Pavilion’s database.
Radio Two host Elaine Paige headlines Sunday’s closing show of the festival Songs from Stage And Screen, alongside Wet Wet Wet frontman and stage actor Marti Pellow, as well as Jonathan Antoine and Laura Wright, all accompanied by Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra.
Elaine said: ““It is fantastic to see the nation has such an affinity with show tunes and You’ll Never Walk Alone is very much a classic.
“I will be looking forward to bringing this and other songs from the stage alive at Lytham Festival.”
Second place went to the signature song from modern classic musical Wicked, Defying Gravity - which fans of Lytham’s Last Night Of The Proms will remember from last year’s show featuring Kerry Ellis, the first UK actress of play the lead role of Elphaba in the West End.
The survey also found that Grease was the favourite musical, registering one in five votes.
Fans can get their Fifties’ nostalgia fix at tonight’s Picnic Cinema show at Lytham Hall. Doors open for the outdoors screening of the eternally popular film for campers at 5pm and general entrance from 7pm - with the film starting at 9.30pm.
