Fleetwood Town are lining up a star-studded music festival at the club’s Highbury ground which will bring thousands of fans to the Port.

Chairman Andy Pilley said he was looking to put something on at the club’s Highbury stadium on June 1 starring “major headline artists”.

With Mark ‘Bez’ Berry from Happy Mondays being spotted at the ground on a number of occasions, most recently after speaking at an anti-fracking demo in Fleetwood, speculation is mounting at the calibre of performers who could be lined up for the gig. Mr Pilley said: “Nothing has been set in stone as yet, but what we would like to do has the potential to be enormous.

“Negotiations are ongoing and if we can pull it off it will be incredible.

“Bez has been in the area to promote his anti-fracking message and we’ve discussed several opportunities on how we may make best use of the stadium during the close-season. One proposed project is very interesting.”

Steve Lynton from the Granada Fish Bar on North Albert Street, Fleetwood, said “The facility at Fleetwood Town is very, very good and I can see this being a very good idea.

“Anything that brings extra revenue into the town and directs people to explore Fleetwood is certainly very positive. Andy has always been very progressive with his thinking and this is something which I feel is a brilliant idea.”

The festival, if it goes ahead, comes as Wyre Council, Fleetwood Town Council and Fleetwood Chamber of trade invested £3,600 on Explore Fleetwood signs.

Coun Lynne Bowen, cabinet member for tourism at Wyre Council, said: “I welcome anything that brings visitors to the town and boosts tourism.

“There’s so much on offer in Fleetwood, I hope people are encouraged to stay longer and spend time exploring the town and seafront or even come for the weekend.”
