Karima Francis is on a mission – to make Blackpool a place musicians want to come and play.
Not content with working on a third album (she starts recording songs soon, there’s interest from quite a few labels), Karima has launched a new music night she hopes will “put the resort back on the map”.
The Acoustic Showcase will take place on the first Monday of every month at The Galleon, with Karima determined not just to book local artists but acts from further afield too.
“There are a lot of very good artists who tour with big-name acts and those are the kind of people I want to attract,” she said.
“The problem in Blackpool is that there aren’t any venues for those type of musicians to play.
“I want to change that and get them into town, make Blackpool a place where these musicians want to come.”
To prove her point she has booked London’s Matt McGowan for the opening night on November 4.
“He is a brilliant singer-songwriter who I think is going to make it big,” said Karima. “That’s the kind of act I want on and I’ve already had quite a lot of contact from other musicians that want to come and play the venue in future months.”
As for Karima’s own music, she’s continuing to write songs and rehearse with her new band in readiness for a third album.
“It is going phenomenally well and I am really excited about it,” she said. “I can’t say too much at the moment but I am going to record some new stuff in a few weeks time and a lot of people are showing an interest.”
The Acoustic Showcase at The Galleon on Abingdon Street starts at 8.30pm on Monday November 4. Entry is free.
