Hit rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar is the first major musical announced for Blackpool’s Opera House in 2015.

Tickets go on sale on Friday for the classic show, which runs at the Winter Gardens’ theatre from Tuesday, March 10 to Saturday, March 14.

The national tour promises a star cast, to be announced, for the musical from the pens of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Winter Gardens managing director Michael Williams said: “We are delighted to announce Jesus Christ Superstar, a show which has wowed millions across the world since its inception, and look forward to work with Bill Kenwright on what will be a stunning adaption.

“This is the first musical of 2015 and joins an already-eclectic mix of events which over the coming weeks will be added to.”

Jesus Christ Superstar exploded onto the musical scene in 1971, stunning audiences and changing the face of
musical theatre forever.

The rock opera tells the story of the last seven days in the life of Jesus through a ground-breaking score.

Written more than 40 years ago, Jesus Christ Superstar has some of musical theatre’s most legendary songs from I Don’t Know How to Love Him, Everything’s Alright, and Gethsemane through to, of course, Superstar.

Produced by Bill Kenwright and the creative team behind numerous blockbuster musicals, Jesus Christ Superstar tells the world’s oldest story with the theatricality they have brought to Evita, Joseph, Cabaret, Blood Brothers and Whistle Down the Wind among others.

In 2012, the show was brought to primetime ITV when Andrew Lloyd Webber launched an talent search called Superstar, where the public was called on to vote for a performer to tackle the role of Jesus in a new arena tour of the show.

That production was headed by Superstar winner Ben Forster, with comedian Tim Minchin as Judas Iscariot, former Spice Girl Melanie C as Mary Magdalene and BBC Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles as King Herod.
