She is one of the world’s most popular and recognised stars.
But Miley Cyrus has rubbed Blackpool folk up the wrong way after describing the resort as “like a zombieland” and the “weirdest” place she had ever visited.
And the comment, made while the pop star was talking about fish and chips in an interview with Preston radio station Rock FM, has sparked an online backlash.
Residents have taken to Twitter, where Miley has almost 13 million followers, in their droves to tell the American singer exactly how much they love Blackpool.
Cyrus told Rock FM Blackpool was “one of the strangest places I’d ever been to in my entire life”, adding: “I got there and was like this is the weirdest place, there was like this amusement fair but no-one was there because it wasn’t summertime. It reminded me of like a zombieland.”
It comes after the pop princess visited the town in December 2009 to perform in the Royal Variety Performance at the Opera House.
Fans of the town used the hash-tag #educatingmiley to let her know what she was missing out on.
Sally Bradley said: “Great people live here with big hearts and the problem is you’ve just made the majority of us angry.”
Becky Croston tweeted: “Blackpool has the best fish and chips, the amazing tower ballroom and the Pleasure Beach.”
Rock FM’ DJ Hywel Evans said: “In Miley’s defence there weren’t many holiday makers here in December, and she probably didn’t catch a sunset over the Prom.
“But that’s no excuse for calling us strange. We decided it would be a bit of fun to show her what Blackpool has to offer. Hopefully she’ll be back soon.”
