It's a new world for festival's second year

Other Worlds Festival launched last year, bringing in national and international acts and fans of sound art to the resort.

The festival, created by Rick Thompson and Carlito Juanito - who run local record label Must Die Records, celebrates music outside the mainstream where artists push music and performance boundaries.

This year’s Other World’s Festival runs from April 7 to 10, and is set to feature international artists from Europe and the United Arab Emirates.

Among the hightlights will be a ‘hands-on musical experimentation including a sound walk where participants experience the sound of their environment in totally new and exciting ways.’

Festival organiser Rock said: “We have over 20 acts appearing. They include the well-known folk musician Richard Dawson who’s been described as an English version of Captain Beefheart.

“We’ve also got Laura Cannell, who ended last year being hailed by The Wire as one of the top experimental artists in the country.

“We also have acts like the Sound Book Project who are a group of artists and musicians who use books as instruments.

“And, this year we have a special night hosted by Tse Tse Fly from Dubai - the region’s first ever sound art and experiments-in-noise platform.

“They provide support for Middle Eastern sound artists and experimental musicians and are intent on connecting and telling the world about their regional sound art and noise experiments.”

Other Worlds is supported by Arts Council England, Must Die Records, The Skinny and The Wire.

Rick added that its development was a ‘natural progression from the record label’.

“It felt like an organic move. The main intention has always been supporting the music we enjoy and wanted to see; that extends from a similar ethos behind the record label too.

“It feels good to be able to bring this kind of stuff to Blackpool and share the things we love with an audience.

“We’ve added the strap line ‘out there sounds from out there’ to the festival [this year] - hopefully it captures the essence of the festival better than Experimental Music and Sound Art.

“We wanted to act as a platform for anything left field and off kilter - outsider music, avant-garde, experimental music, drone, psych, field recordings, elements of the DIY scene etc.”
