Seniors, reigning title holders of the UK’s Best Fish and Chip Takeaway, opened their brand new Xpress shop in Bispham Village last week watched by three very strange sea creatures.

Sharkey and Sunni from Sealife Blackpool and Captain Cod from Fleetwood Town Football Club made sure that the public weren’t battered as the doors were opened for the new Xpress Diner in the now unrecognisable former HSBC bank.

Promoting sustainably caught fish, which is always used by the award winning chain, the Sealife characters were popular with the young diners, who were more interested in having their faces painted and hugging the creatures than what was on the menu.

Entertainer TC Trev who lives nearby, was first customer through the door to sample the first portion of freshly cooked fish and chips.

“‘I live nearby so this is fantastic,” he said. “I shall certainly be a regular customer and they’ll get to know me well.”

The new diner style seemed to go down well too, with many of the customers choosing to eat their lunch in the seating area.

“We’ve worked marvels to get the shop turned around in time,” said owner Alastair Horabin. “‘If you’d seen it a couple of weeks ago you’d never have believed that we’d ever serve food from here, it was such a building site, and now it’s a first class shop that we’re all very proud of.”

Seniors won the UK’s Best Fish and Chip Take Away from the industry body Seafish, in January for their Thornton shop

Opening hours at Seniors Bispham are from 11.30am to 2pm and 4.30 to 9pm Monday to Saturday, and Sunday in season from 4.30 to 9pm.
