There were mixed fortunes for a Fleetwood chippy when it scooped a major national award – but missed out on the top prize.

Staff from Richardson’s Fish Bar, on Dock Street, travelled down to London this week for the annual National Fish and Chip Awards.

Boss Chris Richardson went in full of confidence after receiving a message of support from a famous fan.

Former Emmerdale star and hopeful on this year’s series of BBC talent show The Voice Kelsey-Beth Crossley tweeted the restaurant, saying: “Good luck!!! Sure you will do it! Best fish and chips I have ever had!!!”

At the ceremony on Wednesday, the popular fish and chip shop took home the Good Catch award, for supporting sustainable fishing.

But it was beaten to the top award, Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year, by Whitby rival Quayside.

Mr Richardson said: “That would have been the pinnacle – it’s what we set out to achieve when we moved to the shop in 2007.

“But we were applauded by the judges for our sustainability and wanting to use products from the British Isles and not just rely on imports.”
